Unmasking The Numbers of Fear

Fear has a strange relationship with numbers. A number can be nothing more than a symbol, yet the human mind can transform it into a warning, a prediction, a curse, or even a prophecy. We count the years of our lives, the days remaining before an event, the money in our accounts, the distance between ourselves and danger, and the chances of success or failure. Numbers help us understand reality, but they can also become instruments through which fear disguises itself as certainty. Once a number is attached to something frightening, the mind often gives that number a power it does not actually possess.This is one of the great puzzles of human existence. Why do numbers sometimes frighten us more than the reality they represent? Why does a certain age, date, quantity, percentage, or numerical prediction suddenly acquire emotional power? And why are human beings so easily persuaded that numbers hidden inside ancient texts, dreams, predictions, or coincidences contain messages about their destiny?The answer begins with a simple observation: human beings dislike uncertainty. We would rather have an explanation—even a frightening one—than remain in the uncomfortable territory of not knowing. Numbers appear to offer certainty. They seem precise, objective, and measurable. When someone says that something has a ninety percent probability of happening, the statement sounds authoritative. When someone assigns a particular numerical meaning to an ancient symbol, the number can appear to possess an almost supernatural significance. Yet precision is not the same as truth. A number can be perfectly precise and still be attached to a completely mistaken interpretation.Numbers themselves are neutral. Fear enters through the meaning we give them.
