Last Edition

Birmingham, October 1907. After the Midland Evening Chronicle's senior subeditor is found dead at the newspaper office, the scene suggests an accident—but troubling questions quickly surface. A forged proof attacks reporter Julian Reed's reputation, while a threat built from confidential medical information places physician Eleanor Hartwell's practice in jeopardy. As Inspector Arthur Pembroke conducts a careful investigation, Eleanor follows the medical evidence without overstating its certainty. Julian traces the Chronicle's editorial routines, printing practices and financial records, uncovering missing advertising payments and a trail of altered documents. Together, they must distinguish scandal from proof before a calculated scheme destroys careers and conceals the truth. Set amid Edwardian newspaper offices, printers' shops and Birmingham streets, The Last Edition combines fair-play detection, professional integrity and restrained romance. Eleanor and Julian's settled affection is tested not by misunderstanding, but by the deliberate attack on everything they value—reputation, confidentiality and trust.
