Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte

The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte is one of Karl Marxs most important political writings, offering a masterful analysis of class struggle, revolution, and state power. Written in 1852, it examines the events surrounding the coup detat of December 2, 1851, in which Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (nephew of Napoleon I) overthrew the French Second Republic and declared himself Emperor of France. Taking its title from Napoleon Bonaparte's original seizure of power on the 18th Brumaire in the French Republican calendar, Marx uses this historical parallel to explore how history repeats itself-"e;the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce."e; The book critiques how class forces, economic conditions, and ideological illusions converge to allow reactionary powers to manipulate democratic institutions. Marx dissects the dynamics of social classes, the failure of the bourgeois republic, and the role of the lumpenproletariat, revealing how political events are shaped by deeper material and class conditions. His sharp prose, biting irony, and deep theoretical insight make The Eighteenth Brumaire a foundational text in political theory and revolutionary thought. This work stands as a timeless lens for analyzing political coups, populism, and authoritarianism, and remains a vital tool for students of history, sociology, political science, and Marxism.
