Clara Comes Home

Jane Durand is a harried, inner city Chicago history teacher at her absolute wits' end. Suffocated by the digital chaos and student disrespect of 2027, she leaves for an approved health sabbatical via the obscure Echo Chamber, seeking two weeks of peace and quiet in rural 1898 Libertyville, Illinois. But when she steps into the past, she is met with profound shock. The local calendar reads 1908, and a terrified blacksmith recognizes her as Clara Nelson, a beloved schoolmistress who vanished into thin air ten years ago.Jane discovers she isn't a modern tourist escaping to the past; she is a displaced 19th-century soul who materialized with amnesia in 2017. The Continuity Office quietly engineered her modern "e;Jane Durand"e; identity to protect her sanity, but her homesick psyche eventually guided her right back to her true home.Reclaiming her true identity, Clara must navigate a town that has already mourned her and an old fiancé who has built a new life. Ultimately, she finds her peace back in the one-room schoolhouse she loves, forever changed by the unique wisdom of just how exhausting the future could be.
