Most treatments of creation answer these questions from a system built long after the text - Greek metaphysics, medieval theology, a denominational statement of faith. This volume works the other way around. It begins in the Tanakh and stays there, asking what the Hebrew text actually says about purpose before any later framework is allowed to speak.

That discipline changes the answers. Some familiar conclusions survive the test. Others turn out to rest on assumptions the text never makes.
