WE CHOSE THIS POLITICAL CLASS is a reflection on democracy, political responsibility and the power citizens exercise every time they vote.
Why do voters continue to choose politicians they later criticize? Why do political promises often prevail over evidence and results? How much can citizens reasonably be held responsible for the political class that governs them?
The book explores these questions without endorsing a particular political party or ideology.
It examines the relationship between citizens and political power through topics such as political promises, voting behaviour, ideology, interests, consensus, media and propaganda, voter anger, justice, young people, Europe, globalization, corruption, privileges and the challenges of the future.
At the heart of the book is a simple principle: political power must be judged not only by what leaders say, but by what they are able to do and by the results they achieve.
The reader is invited to distinguish between:
promises and actual decisions;
political responsibility and criminal responsibility;
facts and opinions;
accusations and proven facts;
communication and competence;
political loyalty and independent judgment;
institutional responsibility and political blame.
The book also proposes a practical way of evaluating those who receive public authority: examine their commitments, their competence, their actions, their results and their explanations.
No political party is perfect. No politician is infallible. And no citizen can predict the future with certainty.
But citizens can remember.
They can compare promises with results. They can question their own political side. They can recognize good decisions even when made by opponents. They can change their minds when facts justify it.
Most importantly, they can understand that democracy does not end when the ballot is cast.
The political class we have is shaped, in part, by the choices we make. And if we want different politics, we must also be willing to make different choices.
