Troupers of the Gold Coast or the Rise of Lotta Crabtree

"Troupers of the Gold Coast or the Rise of Lotta Crabtree" is a vivid historical account of the American stage during one of its most transformative and colorful eras. Written by cultural historian Constance Rourke, this work chronicles the meteoric ascent of Lotta Crabtree, often called the "Nation's Darling," who began her career as a child performer in the rugged mining camps of the California Gold Rush.

Beyond a mere biography, the book provides a panoramic view of the early Western theatrical circuit, capturing the spirit of the traveling troupes, the rowdy atmosphere of the frontier, and the evolution of American popular entertainment. Rourke meticulously details the social and cultural landscape of the mid-19th century, exploring how Crabtree's unique talent and charisma mirrored the energy of a nation expanding westward. From the rough-and-tumble saloons of the Sierra Nevada to the prestigious stages of New York, this narrative explores the grit and glamour of the performing arts in an age of rapid growth. It serves as an essential record of the development of American vaudeville and comedy, highlighting the enduring legacy of one of the most beloved performers of the Victorian era.
