Some people wait their whole lives to be seen.

Silas Monroe waited ninety-one years.

In the summer of 2026, a twenty-five-year-old medical historian named Hunter Anderson arrives in Weston, West Virginia, to research the diagnostic language of Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum - one of the largest hand-cut stone buildings in the world, and one of the most notorious psychiatric institutions in American history.

He does not expect the building to be listening.

On his first evening in the corridors, Hunter hears a sound he recognizes immediately: a tic. An involuntary vocalization. The same sound his own body makes.

Hunter has Tourette's syndrome. So did Silas Monroe - a thirteen-year-old boy committed to Trans-Allegheny in 1923 under a diagnosis of moral defect, eleven years after the medical name for his condition already existed in a published paper in Paris. A paper that never reached Weston, West Virginia. A word that never reached Silas.

Over the course of one summer, Hunter sits on the floor of the third-floor corridor every evening and gives Silas Monroe what he should have had a hundred years ago: the right words. And Silas, who has been waiting ninety-one years for someone exactly like Hunter to find him, begins to bring Hunter the others - thirteen patients whose intake forms told the world what they were, but never who they were.

Margaret, whose grief was called hysteria. Amos, whose identity was called degeneracy. Ingrid, whose language barrier was called feeble-mindedness. Arthur, whose war was called weakness. Edna, who named her daughter before they took her away, because she knew she might not get the chance after.

Each of them deserved different words than the ones they received. Hunter is here to give them those words - to write the true account in the record beside the false one, and to bear witness to thirteen lives that the institution reduced to a line of cramped confident cursive.

They Were Never Broken is a novel about the distance between what the world calls you and what you actually are. About the diagnostic language that shapes - and sometimes destroys - a human life. About what it costs someone to move through a world that was not built for the way they are. And about what it means, finally, to be seen.

It is also a ghost story. A love story. And the most important summer of one young man's life.
