I wrote this book because I lost a bet with myself.
The bet was the usual one - the one they don't tell you you're making,
so you make it anyway, cheerfully, at twenty-two, signing forms you don't
read and nodding at projections you don't understand. The bet goes: work
hard, defer gratification, and the floor will eventually hold. I made it. Most
people I know made it. And somewhere around the third year of watching
my rent climb faster than my salary, eating lunch at my desk to seem seri‐
ous, and calculating whether I could afford both a dentist appointment
and a functioning winter coat in the same quarter, I had to admit: I lost.
