The universe stayed silent for three hundred years. Then, in a single night, it spoke.

At the edge of the Solar System, a perfectly black sphere appears out of nothing, transmitting a message and starting a forty-one-day countdown: a gate is opening; those who wish to cross must come - after that, never again.

Mira Lascăr, a signal analyst on a forgotten station on the moon Triton, is the first human to hear the call.
