Vella Pell-Threvor kept her kill-board on the inside of the cabin door, painted in white char-stick on the dark planking, so that every morning when she opened the door to step out she had to look at what she had done.
Seven seasons in the Brackish Mountains. Six aspects unlocked of twenty. Three fingers on her draw-hand. One Mirror skill, Reflect-Bind, sitting on her board for four cycles, refilling, ready, because Mirror was a trap skill and trap skills were not spent lightly.
The bounty had been posted at the Brackish Post for forty-two days when she took it. No hunter had attempted it. The bounty had begun at twenty silver and had risen by ten silver per fortnight since posting. Eighty silver was four cycles of supplies. Eighty silver was the bounty's way of saying we know what this is and we are not pretending it is small.
The target was a Hollow-tuned thinning-fox. Hollow-tuned creatures consumed substrate-context. They ate the conditions that made things be what they were. A patch of moss thinned was a patch of moss that had lost some of the conditions that made it moss. Given enough thinning, the moss became not-moss, and then became air, and then was gone.
Four days into the climb, in a stream-cut on the Section 4 ridge, Vella found a hunter sitting against a flat stone with his bow on his knees and one cheek that was perhaps two-thirds as dense as the other. He had been thinned along the side facing the way the fox had come from. His bow grip was wrapped with Mirror-aspect cord.
So was Vella's.
The Substrate Hunter is a quiet, mechanically-honest LitRPG novelette about a hunter who has built her board with seven seasons of careful unlocks and is about to learn what the board has been building her into. About the difference between a tool and a signature. About what it costs to spend the rare unlock you have been saving. About the kind of pride that wraps a Mirror-cord on a bow-grip and the kind of wisdom that takes the cord off.
Set in the Imbrium worldbuilding cycle. The sixth published Tales from the Imbrium novelette, and the first to lean into the LitRPG form. Standalone - no prior reading required.
For readers of Will Wight's quieter beats, Andrew Rowe's Sufficiently Advanced Magic, Mother of Learning, T. Kingfisher's apprentice stories, and anyone who reads LitRPG for the system-mechanics-as-theme work rather than for the level-grind. The skill mechanics here are real and load-bearing; the story is about what a working skill system makes its user into.
