A street goes down to the sea and does not reach it. For five hundred years, men have walked its slope.

One carries water down a steep mountain path without spilling a drop, learning from an old man who explains nothing that the small correction a man makes out of fear of falling is the very thing that makes him fall.

Centuries later, on that same ground, a man takes a cheap hotel room above the shore and is given one with a view of the sea he never asked for. He counts the thirteen streetlights on the way down. He cannot sleep. At four in the morning he walks to the water to face something he has misunderstood since he was a boy.

And in the present day, a third man sits at a café window at the head of that street, drinking his coffee black, watching the people pass. He has never spoken to any of them. He knows their griefs the way he knows his own.

The Street That Descends to the Sea moves through three ages of a single place and draws them into one continuous walk downhill, toward the water, toward the low place where every life eventually arrives. A novel about memory, descent, and the long quiet way home.
