The Storage Fee

For four years, Tomás Aldana paid a fee.

Not rent. Not a debt. A monthly line on a statement from Vesper Continuity Services, holding what was left of his wife in a cradle across the harbour - against a procedure that did not yet exist at any price.

He sold the flat to pay it. Then the van. Then her mother's ring, which bought eleven months.

He is sixty-three. He sleeps in the back room of the repair shop he has run for forty years, mending things for people who cannot afford to replace them. The statement on his counter is fourteen days past due on the morning Vesper calls to tell him the tissue is failing.

He signs at the table. His wife has six months. The offer has a date on it.

What wakes up is not what he was promised. It is better. It is beautiful, and adored, and it photographs extraordinarily well, and it is loved by four million people - and somewhere in the paperwork, in a field on a registry form, in an enumerated list with no entry for married, thirty-one years quietly stopped counting.

Nobody lies to him. Not once. Everything he is told is true.

That is the worst of it.
