Genre: historical erotic fiction
Subgenre: Renaissance erotic romance with elements of intrigue, suspense, and mystery
Setting: Florence and its surrounding area, Tuscany
Year: 1546, from autumn to early winter.
In Florence in the autumn of 1546, Tullia d'Aragona, a poet and courtesan celebrated for her intelligence and independence, enters the city's salons with her reputation already preceding her. During a dinner at Bartolomeo Serristori's palazzo, she meets Lorenzo Albizzi, an advocate of a Platonism that distrusts bodily desire. Their dispute about love immediately becomes personal: Tullia maintains that body and soul can come to know each other through desire, while Lorenzo fears that possession will ultimately distort what one loves. Their provocation gives rise to a thirty-day pact: not merely words, but an emotional and erotic experiment governed by rules, letters, and mutual tests.
The first week is devoted to the kiss, examined as promise, deception, possession, confession, and language. Day after day, their intellectual discipline begins to crack, revealing hesitations, vulnerabilities, and an attraction neither can any longer treat as a mere philosophical subject. In the second phase, private letters and more intimate encounters turn the body into a form of discourse: Tullia and Lorenzo learn to state their desires and limits, discovering that honesty can be more unsettling than seduction.
Meanwhile, a second narrative thread unfolds. In Lorenzo's study, Tullia notices a small chest hidden behind some books; shortly afterward, someone breaks into the house and attempts to force it open. The papers it contains prove to be connected to Giuliano Rucellai, a troubled poet who has collected letters and notes capable of linking clandestine passions, money, and sudden shifts in Florentine political life. When Giuliano is found dead in the Arno, a far more dangerous shadow falls over the lovers' game.
Unable to accept convenient explanations, Tullia begins to investigate. Drawing on her own memory, confidences shared in salons, and figures such as the elderly Lucrezia Gondi, she follows clues leading toward a web of secrets built upon the private weaknesses of Florence's most influential families. Against this ambiguous atmosphere stands Bernardo Salviati, a wealthy, courteous, and inscrutable man who has been alongside the protagonists from the beginning.
The investigation also places Tullia and Lorenzo's relationship under strain. They discover that the true test is no longer to determine whether desire saves or destroys love, but to understand whether intimacy can exist without trust. Reticence, fears, and suspicions force them to reveal more of themselves than they had anticipated. Tullia then turns her fame, her intelligence, and the way others judge her into investigative tools, willingly entering a dangerous game in which seduction and power become almost indistinguishable. The thirty-day count continues, but the original experiment has now become inseparable from a greater challenge: truly knowing another without reducing that person to an idea and defending one's freedom as Florence reveals the secret face of its desires.
