THE RIVER OF WORK

Work is moving faster. Trust is not.
An AI system can classify a request, gather information, prepare a draft, and trigger the next action in moments. Yet the most damaging failures often happen between those actions: the wrong version is used, an approval is skipped, a request waits without an owner, a retry creates a duplicate consequence, or a polished output is mistaken for a completed result.
The River of Work makes single-agent workflow orchestration understandable from first principles. Written for non-technical readers, it replaces intimidating system language with a memorable river model: work enters through a trigger, moves through channels, waits in queues, crosses decision gates, branches when conditions change, pauses at checkpoints, follows recovery routes after failure, and reaches completion only when the promised result can be responsibly accepted.
Through story-driven dialogues at the fictional Common Ground Workshop, clear visual models, practical exercises, and mathematics without fear, readers learn how to design AI-supported workflows that remain useful under real-world pressure.
Inside, readers will discover how to:

• Turn scattered AI actions into a visible end-to-end workflow
• Use sequence, branches, routers, queues, parallel work, loops, events, and schedules with clear purpose
• Design timeouts, retries, fallbacks, escalation paths, and checkpoints without creating endless motion
• Protect external actions through workflow state, approval boundaries, evidence, and idempotency
• Reason about flow rate, waiting time, throughput, bottlenecks, capacity, cost, failure probability, and rework in plain language
• Observe workflow health, notice drift, learn from feedback, and improve without uncontrolled self-modification
• Divide complex problems into meaningful chunks and build a complete customer-request workflow from trigger to verified completion
