Daniel Chu has a system.
Daniel is twelve years old, and he has just been appointed Community Board Coordinator at the Fairfield Public Library for the summer. His job: receive notices, categorize them, follow up in the field when required, and maintain the log.
The previous coordinator wrote "handled" with no further explanation. Daniel writes everything down.
Over the course of one summer, Daniel logs seventy-nine notices: lost cats, piano lessons, a yard sale at 14 Orchard Street, six kittens, a property boundary dispute, and one notice that does not fit any category he has invented yet. He will develop eleven new subcategories before August is over. He will retire the Misc. section entirely. He will also learn that some notices are not really about what they say they are.
The Notice Board is a funny, precisely observed story about what it means to keep track of things, and what happens when keeping track is not quite enough.
