Jordan Bell is eleven years old and believes a good map should answer questions before anyone has time to argue. He draws streets carefully, checks bus routes, and likes proof that stays where he puts it. At the beginning of the story, that practical intelligence has hardened into control. After classmates mocked a childhood drawing, Jordan learned to protect himself by laughing first and insisting that imagination belongs to younger children. That choice becomes personal when his six-year-old sister Maya prepares a fourth place at dinner for Fizzlebop, her bright-orange imaginary friend. Fizzlebop has two very long ears, a loose orange thread at the left-ear seam, a cream muzzle and belly, three small brass bells braided into a teal tail cord, oversized three-toed feet, a teal crossbody pouch, and a serious objection to spoons because curved reflections turn his face upside down. Jordan refuses to address him. His dismissal lands not only as an opinion but as a break in a shared family moment.
By morning, Fizzlebop has vanished too abruptly. Maya is still herself-intelligent, loved, observant, and capable-but an important creative connection has been severed. She cannot find the Moon Orchard on her map, remember the rules of the three-bell game, or finish the blue crayon route she and Fizzlebop made together. The book never equates imagination with intelligence, health, or worth, and it never codes Maya's diminished drawing pressure as illness. Instead, the change gives Jordan concrete evidence that something specific has been taken before Maya was ready to let it go. Their mother, Renee Bell, takes Maya's feelings seriously, documents what happened, searches through responsible real-world channels, and expects Jordan to help without allowing him to decide the answer for his sister.
The threshold into the fantasy world remains grounded in the city Jordan knows. Parcel, a one-foot creature assembled from a red mitten torso, mismatched bottle-cap eyes, paper-clip whiskers, one roller skate, a green sock tail, and tiny parcels, leads Jordan to an ordinary bus shelter. Beneath its bench, a blank maintenance panel unfolds into a brass-and-paper door. Jordan enters the Lost-and-Found Department for Imaginary Friends, a handmade hidden institution filled with claim tickets, rolled maps, file drawers, paper-bird forms, waiting companions, and routes that behave according to remembered rules. The Department is strange, funny, bureaucratic, and imperfect. It is not a grim warehouse where abandoned friends are discarded. Its ordinary purpose is to receive companions through gradual separation when children genuinely change. Fizzlebop's arrival is different because the connection was cut all at once.
Detective Nobody investigates the case. Nobody is permanently invisible and identified by a plum felt hat, charcoal raincoat, pale gray gloves, and polished oxblood shoes that hang and move as if worn by a real body. The detective's invisibility is never treated as a reveal, a disability metaphor, or an excuse for visual inconsistency. Nobody notices absences, asks one precise question at a time, protects unrelated records, and can follow or verify a route that already exists but cannot invent a new route on a child's behalf. Carmen Rivera, a twelve-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican junior agent, becomes Jordan's field partner. She has deep brown skin, dense curls held by a narrow plum headband, an ochre utility jacket, plum shirt, charcoal trousers, teal boots, a brass compass brooch, and a hard-sided indigo map case. Carmen is a possibility-map specialist. Her maps reveal choices rather than deciding destinations, and her competence challenges Jordan's belief that a map is valuable only when it controls the traveler.
