Mara Vale knows a repaired book when she sees one. This particular repair is about to ruin the library fundraiser.

Back in the coastal town of Gullbridge, Mara has found work mending books at Lantern Library. Then she recognises her own handiwork inside an atlas displayed as the library's untouched treasure. It is the wrong copy. Before retired cataloguer Silas Venn can establish what happened to the right one, Mara finds him on the map-room floor.

A borrowing record points towards a young delivery rider. Mara's repair tells a different story. As she follows the histories of two nearly identical books, she discovers how easily an accurate record can be used to tell a lie-and how much the town has entrusted to the people who always offer to help.
