The Idiom of Love

Silas has spent most of his life wondering why love seems to come so easily to everyone except him.

At seven, he begins noticing the small things other families do. Mothers hug their children at the school gate. Fathers carry their sons across parking lots. Children fight, make up, and reach for each other without thinking about it. Silas watches them closely, trying to understand what they seem to know naturally.

At home, things are different. His parents feed him, dress him, and make sure he gets to school, but there is little warmth between them. His mother rarely touches him. His father barely speaks to him. Silas slowly begins to believe that whatever makes people easy to love is something he was born without.

Then, when he's seven, his Aunt Bea arrives without warning.

For eleven days, she treats him differently. She listens to him. She plays with him. When he falls and hurts himself, she holds him and lets him cry.

Then she disappears.

Years later, Silas discovers a hidden box beneath a loose floorboard in his parents' bedroom. Inside are photographs and documents belonging to Micah, the brother he never knew existed, who died as a baby.

The discovery forces him to question everything he thought he knew about his family, but it doesn't give him the answer he wants.

As he grows older, Silas becomes good at giving people what they need. He knows when to apologize, when to reach out, when to say the right thing. He can make people feel understood without ever understanding what they see in him.

At fourteen, he meets Vivienne and pushes her away before she can leave him first.

At twenty-four, he falls in love with Genevieve, only to lose her when she realizes that his kindness feels practiced rather than natural.

Then, after his father's death, Silas finds years of letters from Bea proving that she never stopped trying to reach him.

For the first time, he learns that someone had loved him enough to fight for him.

But by then, much of his life has already passed.

Decades later, after losing nearly everyone who once mattered to him, Silas finally experiences something he has spent his entire life trying to understand. It happens in an ordinary courtyard, when a frightened child reaches for him and he holds her without thinking.

For once, there is no performance.

No careful response.

No trying to figure out what he is supposed to feel.

He simply feels it.

The Idiom of Love is a quiet, heartbreaking novel about childhood neglect, family secrets, fear, and the ways people learn to protect themselves from being hurt. It is also about the possibility of discovering, even late in life, that the thing you spent years believing you could never feel was inside you all along.

This version keeps the same plot, characters, and emotional arc, but reads more like a human-written back-cover description rather than an intentionally literary synopsis.
