THE HP 300s+

A scientific calculator is a small instrument with an unexpectedly large intellectual perimeter. It carries arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, measurement and the habits of verification into the hand, where convenience can either serve thought or quietly replace it.
This treatise therefore moves from the physical and operational language of the HP 300s+ to the mathematical structures that make its results meaningful. It covers modes, menus, entry and editing; exact and approximate arithmetic; functions, equations, tables, statistics and regression; applications in geometry, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, engineering and finance; examination strategy; numerical reliability; and the reference appendices.
The governing practice is deliberately repeated: define the quantity, declare the units and assumptions, derive the expression, enter it carefully, inspect the display, and verify the result independently. A sequence of keystrokes is not yet a calculation until its mathematical meaning has been made visible.

A device can evaluate an expression, yet it cannot decide whether the expression is appropriate, whether the data deserve confidence or whether the answer has been reported with intellectual honesty.
The reader will meet the same disciplined cycle throughout the volume: identify the quantity sought; define variables and units; choose a model; derive the expression; select the correct calculator state; enter the expression deliberately; inspect the result; and test it against magnitude, dimensions and an independent route.
The chapters are arranged progressively. The opening chapters establish the instrument and its modes; the middle chapters develop arithmetic, algebra, functions, equations, statistics and scientific applications; the later chapters address efficient workflows, diagnostic reasoning, examination practice, numerical reliability and the limits of a non-programmable calculator.
