Jesus appeared in my pasture while I was feeding pigs. Naturally, I had questions.
I'd recently stopped believing in God, so finding Jesus of Nazareth standing barefoot beneath my old oak tree seemed like a pretty good indication that the afternoon heat had finally gotten to me.
But he was willing to talk, and I wasn't about to waste the opportunity.
What followed were two extraordinary days of uncensored conversation with the man, the myth, and the legend himself.
We talked about Yahweh, the Bible, heaven and hell, grace, suffering, love, and whether living a good life really requires divine supervision.
I challenged his teachings. He challenged my assumptions. We laughed, disagreed, drank coffee, and occasionally received unsolicited wisdom from Hal, a homemade sock puppet with strong opinions and questionable theological credentials.
But our conversations left me with a harder question than whether Jesus had really appeared: How should I live now that the answers I once trusted no longer satisfy me?
I began turning our exchanges into sixty-one short reflections on curiosity, evidence, relationships, forgiveness, personal responsibility, and living kindly in a world that offers no guarantees. Not new commandments. Not a substitute religion. A practical framework to test against ordinary life-and revise when experience proves me wrong.
I didn't write this to ridicule believers or recruit anyone into atheism. I've stood on both sides of that divide, and I know how much courage it can take to reconsider convictions tied to family, love, and belonging.
I wanted to make room for believers willing to entertain difficult questions, people deconstructing their faith, those who are spiritual but not religious, and atheists, agnostics, and secular humanists who still find something worthwhile in the teachings attributed to Jesus.
I also wanted to explore a possibility that doesn't require anyone to agree with me about God: that we can build lives of meaning, compassion, and purpose without demanding certainty from ourselves or one another.
After all, when our debates are over, we still have people to love, animals to feed, mistakes to own, and lives to get on with.
And if you simply enjoy an unconventional story with a little philosophical mischief, Hal has graciously agreed to participate. Nobody can guarantee he'll behave.
Was it a miracle? Heatstroke? Or simply the most remarkable conversation I'd ever imagined?
The Heatstroke Gospel: An Uncensored Testament is my humorous, provocative, and unexpectedly personal work of philosophical fiction exploring faith, doubt, religious deconstruction, and the search for a kinder, more coherent way to live.
You don't have to believe my story to find something worth thinking about.
