The Growth of American Trade Unions

"The Growth of American Trade Unions, 1880-1923" is a seminal economic and historical study that charts the evolution of organized labor in the United States during a period of intense industrial transformation. Written by noted economist Leo Wolman, this work provides an exhaustive analysis of trade union membership, membership trends, and the institutional development of labor organizations from the late nineteenth century through the early twentieth century.

Through rigorous statistical examination, Wolman explores the factors that influenced the rise and fall of union strength across various industries. The work delves into the numerical growth of the labor movement, offering insights into how economic cycles, legislative changes, and social shifts impacted collective bargaining and worker representation. By documenting the expansion of both national and international unions, the book serves as a vital record of the American workforce's organizational efforts during the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, and the post-World War I years.

This scholarly investigation remains an essential resource for those interested in labor economics, industrial relations, and American social history. It provides a detailed foundation for understanding the institutional roots of the modern labor movement and the quantitative shifts that defined a pivotal era in American economic life.
