The Fourth Identity

A federal investigator walked out of a building in Philadelphia on a Thursday morning in November 1996 and never came back. The file calls it a missing person. The paperwork he left behind calls it something else.

Adrian Cole reads documents for a living. Two rooms over a print shop on Callowhill Street, a long table, three cabinets, and a reputation for refusing a photocopy when a bound book exists. He's spent twenty seven years verifying other people. He has never once verified himself.

He takes the case because a journalist asks him to, and because eleven names lifted out of a 1959 county birth register have gone public and nobody can say who put them there. Then the dead man's daughter sets an envelope on his desk, and what's inside it is a credential that shouldn't exist.

The trail is thirty years cold and perfectly kept. A travel voucher that lies about a single day. A door that opens and never opens back out. A memo with four names in a column and not one sentence around them. A grave in Section C with the wrong man in it.

One of the four names is his.

Everyone who could explain it is dead, retired, or waiting. And the answer isn't in any federal file. It's four words in his father's handwriting, in the corner of a page nobody was ever meant to turn over.
