The Flooded Park

The preserve is deeper than the map says, and the map is underwater.

Carrying a man changes you. His weight, the rhythm you fall into, the way he stops being cargo somewhere out there in the dark whether you wanted that or not. He has a name now. He also has a way of looking at each of them that reads precisely what they used to be, before the park got them cheap.

By now everyone knows what is walking with them. The rain has been defeating the camouflage for hours, and the animal comes apart in flickering segments as it moves - a shoulder, a run of osteoderms, the line of a jaw - because the men who designed the panels never accounted for weather.

Seeing it does not help. It hunts on heat and on ground-vibration, and it was conditioned to a cue.

Ahead: a ledge that has to be taken single file, and a creek that is no longer where the map put it. Behind: Vympel, closing, and patient about it. And underneath all of it, in the flooded ground this park was built cheap on top of, is the reason any Russian was ever sent here at all - something the man on the stretcher may suspect, and will never say out loud, and would not survive saying.

Everybody on this trail is carrying something they were told not to put down.
