The Fix

"Regardless of the verdict of juries, no player that throws a ball game...will ever play professional baseball." - Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, August 3, 1921, banning all eight players the day after their acquittal

The 1919 World Series fix is the founding crime of professional sports. It is the case that defined what gambling means to American sport: not a background nuisance but an existential threat, the specific crime that transforms athletic competition from something real into something performed.

In October 1919, eight members of the Chicago White Sox - the best team in baseball - agreed to lose the World Series in exchange for cash from a gambling ring backed by organized crime figure Arnold Rothstein. The signal was Eddie Cicotte's second pitch of Game One, which hit the leadoff batter squarely in the back. The gamblers watching received the signal and immediately began placing their bets.

The Fix tells the complete story:

The Players - Eight men with eight different stories. Eddie Cicotte, the ace pitcher who demanded and received $10,000 in cash in advance. Lefty Williams, the second starting pitcher, whose wife may have been threatened before Game Eight. Chick Gandil, the first baseman who organized the entire conspiracy. Swede Risberg, the shortstop who served as the internal enforcer. Happy Felsch, Oscar the Outfielder. Fred McMullin, the utility infielder who overheard the plan and demanded to be cut in.

And then there are the two whose stories are different from the rest: Buck Weaver, the third baseman who attended the planning meetings, refused to participate, played .324 baseball with no errors in the series he allegedly threw, and was banned for life anyway. And Shoeless Joe Jackson, the outfielder with the third-highest career batting average in baseball history - .356 - who batted .375 in the 1919 World Series with 12 hits, 6 RBIs, the series' only home run, and zero errors, who took $5,000 from the gamblers and then claims he played to win, and whose guilt or innocence has been debated for more than a century.

The Gamblers - Arnold Rothstein, the Big Bankroll, the organized crime figure who was the model for Meyer Wolfsheim in The Great Gatsby, the man described as "the man who fixed the World Series" - who was never charged. Sport Sullivan, Abe Attell, Bill Burns, Billy Maharg - the intermediaries who delivered the money that never fully arrived.

The Unraveling - The rumors that circulated almost immediately. The 1920 grand jury that expanded from a Cubs-Phillies fix into the 1919 World Series. The confessions of Cicotte, Jackson, and Williams that were stolen from court records before trial. The acquittal of all eight defendants on August 2, 1921.

The Ban - Commissioner Landis's statement the very next day. Buck Weaver's seven petitions for reinstatement, denied every time until his death in 1956. Joe Jackson's 31 years of maintained innocence in Greenville, South Carolina.

The 2025 Reinstatement - Commissioner Rob Manfred's removal of all eight players from the permanently ineligible list, opening Hall of Fame consideration more than a century after the ban.
