The First

Two thousand years ago, someone buried a question the world was not ready to answer.

In 2034, a catastrophic flood tears open the Judean Desert and exposes a hidden chamber beneath the ruins of a forgotten first-century community. Inside are forty-one sealed jars-and an archive that has survived untouched since the age of Rome.

The first fragment is more dangerous than any treasure. It describes an effort to record, from living witnesses, what a mysterious teacher actually said before the stories spreading from village to village could take on lives of their own.

Palestinian archaeologist Elias Rahal knows what will happen if the discovery becomes public too soon. Governments will claim it. Institutions will control it. Believers will defend it. Skeptics will weaponize it. So he calls one person he trusts to argue with the evidence itself: Dr. Mara Voss, a brilliant textual critic whose career has been built on refusing certainty where certainty cannot be earned.

As the archive is opened, authenticated, translated, and fought over, its documents begin to reveal the human story beneath one of civilization's most powerful traditions-and the unsettling process by which memory becomes testimony, testimony becomes story, and story becomes something no single person can control.

But the deeper Elias and Mara go, the less the evidence behaves the way either side wants it to.

And nearly two thousand years earlier, a man named Yonah is struggling with the same impossible task: how to preserve what happened without turning what he remembers into what he wishes had happened.

The First is a literary historical thriller about archaeology, faith, memory, power, and the distance between an event and the story the world eventually inherits.

Because sometimes the most dangerous discovery is not an answer. It is a question that survived.
