The First Breath

Every human being enters the world without choosing the circumstances into which they are born.

We do not choose our family, our economic condition, our village or city, our language, our social position, or many of the traditions that surround us. Before we are old enough to understand the world, the world has already begun teaching us what it expects from us.

Some are born into security. Others begin life with hunger, uncertainty, crowded homes, insecure work, or social restrictions. Some grow up surrounded by books and opportunities. Others learn their first lessons from work, hardship, migration, discrimination, or responsibility.

Yet beneath these differences is a common human experience: the need to live, understand, belong, choose, and find meaning.

This book follows that journey.

It begins with The First Breath, because every human story begins before we understand what a human story is. It then moves through survival, poverty, home, labour, hunger, curiosity, friendship, love, fear, individuality, migration, work, knowledge, collective action, freedom, social divisions, gender, failure, construction, human dignity, community, purpose, and the responsibility to future generations.

The chapters are connected, but they are not meant to describe one person's life in a strictly chronological way. They are stages of a larger human journey.
