The Bridges of Maniago

Sashara came to Maniago to disappear.

For most of her life she has felt too much - other people's grief and fear arriving in her chest uninvited, a gift that became a wound she is only beginning to recover from. She chooses the little town below the Dolomites for one reason: it has nothing to say to her. A fountain in the piazza, a river that only sounds like water, a bookshop café where a sentence might finally hold still long enough to be written down.

Then she notices a man at the fountain - American, alone, holding himself with the careful stillness of someone who has spent years watching every exit. Michael has come back to the town near the base where he was once stationed, hoping to feel like a whole person again after twelve years of a service that left marks no one can see.

Two people carrying invisible wounds, in a town that asks nothing of either of them. What starts as coincidence becomes coffee, then a climb, then something neither of them went looking for and both are afraid to name.

A tender, aching love story about being seen - and kept, freely, by someone with no reason to offer it but generosity.
