The Battle of Narvik

In The Battle of Narvik: The Arctic Struggle for Norway in 1940, Jack Whitaker tells the dramatic story of the fight for a remote Norwegian port that became one of the most remarkable campaigns of the Second World War. In the spring of 1940, German destroyers carried mountain troops deep into the Arctic to seize Narvik, the vital ice-free harbor through which Swedish iron ore reached Germany. What followed was an extraordinary struggle fought across narrow fjords, snow-covered mountains, and freezing valleys as British, Norwegian, French, Polish, and German forces battled for control of the far north.

Drawing on war diaries, military reports, and contemporary accounts, Whitaker reconstructs the naval battles that destroyed Germany's Narvik destroyer force, the desperate defense led by General Eduard Dietl, and the Allied offensive that eventually recaptured the town. From destroyers fighting at close range inside the Ofotfjord to mountain troops advancing through deep snow, Narvik became a battlefield where weather, terrain, logistics, and endurance mattered as much as firepower.

More than the story of a contested Arctic port, this book reveals the contradictions of a campaign in which the Allies won at sea and retook Narvik, only to withdraw as France collapsed hundreds of miles away. Narvik demonstrated the possibilities and dangers of coalition warfare, inflicted severe losses on the German Navy, and showed how events far beyond the battlefield can transform victory into withdrawal.
