Steph's Story

Steph's Story tells the true story of a woman with Down syndrome, told by her sister. Steph and her family navigate the challenges of education and independence in the early days of Down syndrome acceptance. Readers get glimpses into Steph and her family's life over six decades-from the initial doctor's advice to send Steph away and "try again," to her long and loving relationship with her boyfriend.

The author, who became her sister's legal guardian, shares many insights regarding how the family used the Person-Centered Planning structure to help Steph identify and reach her goals. There are stories of success, as well as times when the family struggled to agree on how best to support Steph. It becomes clear that although everyone wants "what is best" for Steph, not everyone agrees on what "best" really is.
