Schleiermacher and Democracy

This volume addresses the contemporary crisis of liberal democracy by examining the political thought of Friedrich Schleiermacher at the intersection of philosophy and theology. Against the backdrop of democratic backsliding and the rise of post-liberal critiques, the essays reconstruct Schleiermacher's contributions to the core principles of liberal political order: individuality, open discourse, the restriction of power, and the rule of law.

The volume traces a systematic progression from Schleiermacher's philosophical account of agency and individuality, through his understanding of historical development and institutional life, to the theological formation of subjects capable of democratic participation. Particular attention is given to Bildung, the institutional realization of representation and law, and the role of religious discourse and life in forming the "habits of the heart" necessary for civic engagement.
