" Voici une nouvelle version de l' "Initiation à saint Thomas d'Aquin : sa personne et son œuvre", publié il y a presque vingt ans. Ses dimensions et son érudition rendaient cet ouvrage inaccessible à beaucoup, aussi m'a-t-on bien souvent demandé d'en faire une présentation simplifiée pour le mettre à la portée d'un plus large public. Sans rien sacrifier de l'apport de ce premier livre, celui qu'on a entre les mains répond à ce désir. Tout en reprenant intégralement la structure du premier, j'ai délibérément laissé de côté l'appareil scientifique pour faciliter la lecture. Il ne s'agit toutefois pas d'un simple abrégé. J'ai parfois modifié certaines de mes positions, réécrit ou déplacé et même complété certains passages pour tenir compte de travaux plus récents. Qui voudra en savoir davantage sur les motifs de mes choix pourra toujours se reporter à l' "Initiation" où l'on trouvera les références ici omises. Le fond reste le même : apprendre à lire les œuvres de saint Thomas de façon à découvrir l'homme qu'il fut. Celui qu'on a trop souvent présenté comme un penseur intemporel était bien situé dans un temps et un espace déterminés, sous le signe de contingences historiques précises. Ballotté par l'obéissance religieuse sur les routes d'Europe, il lui a fallu travailler dans la hâte, tiraillé par mille tâches diverses, et en laisser un bon nombre inachevées. Sa recherche de la Vérité éternelle, à l'école de presque tous les philosophes et théologiens connus de son temps dont il a inlassablement scruté et commenté les œuvres, s'est donc accomplie sous le signe de l'urgence et de la précarité. Chemin faisant, on s'aperçoit que non seulement le saint est inséparable du philosophe ou du théologien, mais qu'il s'accompagne aussi du maître spirituel. He who has too often been presented as a timeless thinker was indeed situated well in his time and space, and in precise historical circumstances. Buffeted around the roads of Europe by religious obedience, he was obliged to work in haste, torn between a thousand different tasks and leaving many unfinished. His search for eternal Truth, guided by almost all of the philosophers and theologians known in his times whose works he tirelessly scrutinized and commented, was accomplished under the sign of urgency and precariousness.
