He told one joke at a dinner party. Six people laughed. One of them reported him.

Three days later, at twenty minutes past two in the morning, the knock came.

Prisoner 1047: The Gulag Diary is the story of Mikhail Andreyevich Orlov, a Leningrad bridge engineer who wakes one September night in 1937 to find his entire life about to be erased by a system that does not require guilt, only paperwork. Within hours he is a number. Within a year he is standing on a frozen pier at the edge of the Sea of Okhotsk, staring at the coldest inhabited place on Earth, with seven years of his life still ahead of him and no certainty he will survive to see a single one of them end.

What follows is not simply a story of suffering. It is a story of what survives inside a man when everything else has been taken: a wife's three words whispered in a doorway, a colonel's hard won lesson in becoming invisible, a priest's quiet insistence that there remains one room inside a person the state can never search. It is the story of a brigade leader who is neither friend nor enemy but something the camps invented in between. It is the story of a guard who looks away at exactly the right moment, and a doctor who makes an impossible choice with medicine enough to save only one man in three.

Built from years of research into real Kolyma survivor testimony, NKVD archives, and the documented terror that swept the gold camps of Dalstroy in 1938, this novel does not flinch from the true scale of what happened, and it does not need to invent horror, because the horror was already real. What it invents is Orlov: a single thread strong enough for a reader to hold, from a Leningrad stairwell to a Magadan rail platform seven years later, through hunger, betrayal, arbitrary terror, and the small, costly mercies that made survival possible at all.

This is a novel for readers of Yevgenia Ginzburg, Varlam Shalamov, and Anthony Doerr, for anyone who has ever finished a book about the worst that history has done to ordinary people and needed, immediately, to sit quietly for a moment before picking up another. It is unflinching. It is meticulously researched. And it is, in the end, a story about what it costs to keep a single promise across seven years, nine thousand kilometers, and one gold mine at the edge of the world: I intend to still be here.

Once you meet Prisoner 1047, you will not be able to put his story down until you learn whether he keeps his word.
