Portraits from Nature

Nature Spirit Portraits is a richly illustrated art booklet by award-winning artist Barbara Bose, exploring the hidden faces, personalities, and spirits that seem to emerge from trees, stones, roots, bark, weathered trunks, and other natural forms.

Most of us have experienced pareidolia - the instinct to recognize faces in clouds, stones, trees, or random patterns. A knot in a tree becomes an eye. A split in bark becomes a mouth. A leaning trunk becomes a figure. In this series, Bose begins with that familiar human impulse and carries it further, transforming discovered natural forms into a community of expressive characters.

After relocating to California, Bose became fascinated by magnificent old trees, gnarled oaks, towering redwoods, weathered trunks, and ancient rocks that seemed to possess lives of their own. Some appear wise. Others seem mischievous, melancholy, skeptical, startled, tender, humorous, or quietly amused.

Using photography as a starting point, Bose enhances and refines what she sees through stylus work, digital painting, filters, and, at times, traditional paint. Her intention is not to manufacture faces where none exist, but to bring forward the personality already suggested by decades, even centuries, of weathering, growth, and change.

Part artist book, part gallery presentation, and part invitation to look more closely, Portraits from Nature is also a gentle act of re-enchanting nature - restoring a sense of presence, mystery, humor, and relationship to the living world around us. Once a tree or rock reveals its personality, it is almost impossible to see it as "just background" again.
