Periya Saamy

Some places call out to us; some stories captivate our souls. The shrine of Uvari Swayambulinga Swamy extended just such an invitation to me. Nestled on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, the sanctum of 'Periya Saamy'-a self-manifested Lingam-drew me in, not only with its natural grandeur but with the unshakable faith uniting the Nadar, Parathavar, and Ayar communities.

Standing amidst the majestic Palmyra trees and the humid coastal breeze, I was moved by the peace and hope radiating from the devotees. The temple's Sthala Puranam-ancient tales of milk spilling at the Kadamba tree roots, blood gushing from the earth, the divine voice, and the miraculous sandalwood cure-struck me as the perfect seed for this historical narrative.

Beyond mere rituals, unique phenomena like the healing miracles, the vow of carrying sand (Manal Sumakkum Nerthikadan), and the sun illuminating the Lingam during Margazhi symbolize a profound link between human faith and divine power.

This novel is born from a desire to chronicle that bond. It is a tribute to the unified faith of the three clans and the intrinsic connection I felt with the land, its people, and the divine 'Periya Saamy'.
