Oumuamua is the name given by Hawaiian astronomers to a speedy chunk of something that streaked into the solar system from out in the galaxy in 2017, was visible to our telescopes for a few months and then zoomed out of sight. Because there was an unexplained increase in speed as it rounded the sun on its way out of our reach, and because it was hard to classify it as an asteroid or a comet, for a while there was excited speculation it might be a craft piloted by alien intelligence.
