Nobody Told You the Pension Was Gone

You are not behind because you were careless. You were moved into a system nobody explained.

Somewhere in a drawer there is a statement you have not opened. You could work out the number in about twenty minutes. You have not, because some part of you has already estimated the answer and decided it is bad.

Here is what the arithmetic actually looks like. Count everybody, including the people with nothing, and the median working American has $955 saved for retirement. The median fifty-five-year-old has $47,950 against a benchmark of $446,565.

If you thought you were unusual, you are not. You are the median.

What happened

Two things, and nobody announced either one.

• The pension was withdrawn. Over about forty years a promise backed by an institution was replaced by an account you were expected to fill yourself. The amount required was roughly a million dollars. It was never stated.
• Roughly 42 percent of full-time workers were never given a workplace plan at all. People are fifteen times more likely to save when the money is deducted before they see it. That is not a difference in character. It is a difference in plumbing.

And underneath both, a date. The trustees of the Social Security system reported in June 2026 that the old-age fund runs out of reserves in late 2032, after which incoming taxes cover about 78 percent of scheduled benefits. If you are 50, that date falls eleven years before you arrive.

What this book does about it

It shows you how to work out your own number in an evening, using five figures you already have.

Then it shows you what moves that number, and it is not what you have been told. Working three years longer. Claiming later and bridging the gap. Reducing housing costs, where every dollar a month saved is worth twenty-five dollars of capital you no longer need. Collecting entitlements you have not claimed, including forgotten retirement accounts, of which there are 31.9 million holding an estimated $2.1 trillion.

None of that requires a return you cannot get. None requires money you do not have.

What it does not do

It does not tell you everything will be fine. For some readers it will not be, and the chapter for those readers is the one every other book leaves out.

It does not sell you a product, an allocation or a mindset. And it does not pretend that saving fifteen percent is advice you can act on when there is nothing left at the end of the month.
