Apparso a Berlino nel 1923 "Mestiere" raccoglie le centoquattro poesie scritte da Marina Cvetaeva dall'aprile del 1921 all'aprile del 1922, un anno particolarmente tragico per la Russia post-rivoluzionaria, a causa della carestia e della sempre piů brutale guerra civile; e un anno particolarmente duro per la scrittrice, che giŕ aveva perduto la figlia Irina, morta di stenti in un orfanotrofio nel febbraio del 1920, e con il marito Sergej Efron irraggiungibile, arruolato nelle file dei Bianchi, l'armata volontaria filo-zarista: un lunghissimo anno che doveva terminare con la partenza per l'esilio, nel maggio del 1922. Di fronte allo sfascio del suo mondo simboleggiato anche dalla morte, il 7 agosto del 1921, di Aleksandr Blok, il grande e amatissimo poeta che piů di ogni altro influě sulla generazione della Cvetaeva -, sembra quasi titanica l'impresa di questa imponente raccolta; ma Marina lotta con tenacia, accanitamente, per la sopravvivenza della propria voce, ed č forse proprio questo istinto di conservazione lirica a celarsi sotto un titolo che potrebbe sembrare a prima vista freddo, o richiamare addirittura qualcosa di artificioso, cosě alieno invece dallo spirito di questa grande scrittrice. Il mestiere di poeta č, in realtŕ, per Marina la sua ancora di salvezza, e insieme la sua vita piů vera; e valgano, a sgombrare ogni equivoco, le parole della scrittrice, in una lettera a Aleksandr Bachrach del 9 giugno del 1923: "Di che Mestiere si tratta? Di quello lirico..."
