Il "Manuale di stilistica" ha l'obiettivo di fornire gli strumenti essenziali per lo studio formale dei testi, necessario per una comprensione generale delle opere letterarie, in cui forma e contenuto non sono elementi indipendenti, ma costituiscono un'entità inscindibile. Nella prima parte si tracciano alcune coordinate generali: il concetto di stile, il rapporto tra lingua e stile, le procedure della retorica e della stilistica moderna. Nella seconda ci si occupa dei tre macrogeneri fondamentali: la poesia, la prosa e il teatro, offrendo le informazioni di base sulle caratteristiche dei principali tipi testuali e su alcuni loro aspetti tecnici, e tratteggiando alcune tendenze stilistiche fondamentali. Nella terza parte, infine, i concetti illustrati in precedenza sono messi alla prova nell'analisi di dieci esempi di grande letteratura, rappresentativi di diversi periodi e generi.
