Le Christ Pantocrator

Le mot " Pantocrator " est presque inconnu en Occident, alors que l'icône du Christ y apparaît çà et là. Le Christ Pantocrator n'est-il alors que le souvenir dépassé d'une lointaine civilisation byzantine ou peut-il contribuer, aujourd'hui, dans l'équivoque du monde contemporain, à faire redécouvrir l'Image de la divino-humanité de Jésus-Christ ? Ce questionnement a conduit la recherche de l'auteur, ou plutôt l'a mise en route vers Celui qui est " le Chemin, la Vérité et la Vie ". En partant de la Bible et des écrits des Pères de l'Église, elle peut conclure à la " Vérité " du Christ Pantocrator, c'est-à-dire le Tout-Puissant, ou encore Celui qui soutient le monde. Puis, approfondissant les fondements christologiques de cette Icône, justifiés par les sept Conciles œcuméniques, elle en manifeste la " catholicité ". Cette universalité se vérifie aisément avec les huit icônes du Christ Pantocrator présentées dans cet ouvrage : la première située à Rome dans les catacombes, la dernière située en France, sans oublier évidemment celle du mont Sinaï ainsi que les magnifiques mosaïques byzantines de Ravenne, de Sainte-Sophie ou de Daphni ! De plus, l'actualité du Pantocrator s'impose par la méditation philosophique : en authentifiant le champ de l'expérience, la phénoménologie rend possible une rencontre avec le sujet contemplé. Cette rencontre avec le Christ Pantocrator nous remémore le mot de Dostoïevski : " La Beauté sauvera le monde ", sachant que, pour l'écrivain comme pour le théologien, la Beauté c'est le Christ ! -- The word 'Pantocrator' is practically unknown in the West, whereas the icon of Christ does appear here and there. Is the Christ Pantocrator therefore just the outmoded souvenir of a distant Byzantine civilisation, or can it help us today, in the ambiguity of our contemporary world, to rediscover the image of Jesus Christ's divino-humanity? This question guided the author's research, or rather set it in the direction of the One who is 'the Way, the Truth and the Life'. Based on the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers, it opts for the 'Truth' of the Christ Pantocrator, that is to say the All-powerful, or Sustainer of the World. Then, going more deeply into the Christological origins of this icon, justified by the seven Ecumenical Councils, it demonstrates the 'catholicity' therein. This universality is easily confirmed by the eight icons of the Christ Pantocrator presented in this book: the first situated in Rome in the catacombs, the second in France, not forgetting the one at Mount Sinai as well as the magnificent Byzantine mosaics in Ravenna, Saint Sophia and the Daphnion! Moreover, the topicality of the Pantocrator establishes itself by philosophical meditation: by authenticating the field of experience, phenomenology makes an encounter with the contemplated subject possible. This encounter with the Christ Pantocrator reminds us of Dostoevsky's phrase: 'Beauty will save the world', knowing that, for the writer and the theologian, Beauty is Christ!
