How to Become a Dental Hygienist

Dental hygiene is a steady, well-paid career, but getting licensed in Texas takes more than finishing school. You need a national exam, a live-patient clinical exam and a Texas jurisprudence exam, and each has its own rules.

This 2026-2027 guide explains the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and its authority under Texas Occupations Code Chapter 262. It walks through the full license stack: the NBDHE, the clinical board and the Texas jurisprudence exam. It lays out the time and money cost of entry, then covers median pay, the percentile breakdown, the earning ceiling and the job outlook.

The guide also reviews the content you will be tested on, including periodontology, instrumentation, radiography and pharmacology. It covers local anesthesia, oral pathology, dental materials and community dental health. It closes with the professional liability trap hygienists face and a 90-day launch plan for your first paid position.

It is written for pre-hygiene students, dental assistants and career changers in Texas who want a clear map from school to license. Career information, not legal or financial advice.
