What are the ingredients of a hard-boiled detective story? 'Savagery, style, sophistication, sleuthing and sex,' said Ellery Queen. Often a desperate blonde, a jealous husband, and, of course, a tough-but-tender P.I. - the likes of Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe.
