His kind hears gold's song whispered through the arcane. It rejoices with their soul and demands to be owned, to be hoarded and grown.

Keepers and Corvinters are two sides of the arcane spectrum. Humans can either see magic or produce it, never both. Their union is the engine of productivity, uplifting and maintaining a world sustained by their gifts.

To maintain a magical link, Corvinters inscribe a piece of their treasure onto a Keeper. A harmless ritual that enhances their partnership- so long as it remains benign.

Except Orion's mana burns seers on contact.

So why, how, did she commune so easily? Clover is a Keeper from a countryside Temple with gaunt features and a weak heart. By some miracle, she accepted his magic into herself and helped him with a problem he's never been able to tackle alone.

While Orion hates the system that classifies his kind, forcing them into roles that range from builder to soldier, Clover hates that same system for selling Keepers to the highest bidder.

He can't leave her alone with her poor circumstances, but gods, what does he do when gold sings for her? What can Orion do when it demands that he kill the first person to ever believe in him?
