The Black experience in the United States of America is complicated---it is a story of adversity and survival despite almost insurmountable odds. It is also a story filled with ingenuity, entrepreneurship, faith, family, and most importantly love. My goal in writing this book is to bring to the forefront a discussion about the history of mental illness in Black America. There is a sweet spot that I wanted to reach between anecdotal and clinical in order to educate the reader without boring them with jargon. The story begins with the journey from Africa to the Americas, commonly referred to as the Middle Passage and it continues to post-Reconstruction. In the end I hope the reader finds this book to be informative, helpful, and entertaining.
