Do you take the Rocket or Pedro as your top right-hander? Teddy Ballgame has to get the nod over Yaz, but has any franchise had so much talent in left field over the years? Is Nomar your best shortstop, or was it Joe Cronin? With a history so steeped in tradition, and with so many great Hall of Fame players to choose from, selecting the top Red Sox players at each position over the course of more than 100 years is an undeniably daunting task. But who is more perfect to tackle such a task than former Sox great Johnny Pesky? In Few and Chosen: Defining Red Sox Greatness Across the Eras, Pesky ranks the top-five all-time Red Sox at each position. A longtime respected member of the BoSox family and a permanent fixture throughout baseball's golden age, Pesky either played with or saw most of the players on each list. With so many immortal names to choose from in the history of the franchise, most position lists span the different eras of the club's long history, pairing together names such as Babe Ruth and Bill Lee (left-handed pitchers), Cy Young and Pedro Martinez (right-handed pitchers), Jimmie Foxx and Mo Vaughn (first basemen), and Birdie Tebbetts, Carlton Fisk, and Jason Varitek (catchers). Few and Chosen: Defining Red Sox Greatness Across the Eras brings together in words and photographs the greatest players of one of the greatest franchises in all of sports.
