Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783), known for having assisted Denis Diderot in editing the Encyclopédie, played a key role in the Century of Enlightenment. As a mathematician, he opened new pathways for the development of mathematical calculation methods, as a physician, he unified the principles of solid and fluid mechanics, and made considerable contributions to mathematical astronomy.
