Cécile es una novela autobiográfica que recorre buena parte de Europa, con el telón de fondo de la Revolución francesa y el período histórico posterior, y cuenta las complejas relaciones del protagonista, y también narrador de esta historia, con dos mujeres muy distintas e igualmente necesarias para él: su vieja amante y su futura esposa. Quizá por «lo delicado» de algunos pasajes, Benjamin Constant no se atrevió a publicarla en vida, y Cécile no vio la luz hasta 1951, cuando la editorial Gallimard la convirtió en el acontecimiento literario del año en Francia. Si El cuaderno rojo, que publicamos en Periférica hace ahora un año, narra la primera etapa en la vida de Constant, Cécile se ocupa, centrándose sobre todo en el tema amoroso, de la siguiente, es decir, de los veinticinco a los cuarenta años del autor, una etapa que recordará ya retirado de la política y dedicado a escribir su historia de las religiones, junto a una mujer (Cécile, o mejor dicho: Charlotte de Hardenberg, su verdadero nombre) a la que profesa un gran afecto y que lo ama sin condiciones, pero por la que es incapaz de apasionarse, por lo que no tardará en volver a las andadas políticas y amorosas.
