The story begins with Mama building her nest with a "donation" from a garden friend. As the story unfolds, Brother shows us how vulnerable the babies are to threats from predators, the weather, and even well-meaning humans. Sometimes these threats are thwarted by Mama's clever nest design. Sometimes Mama herself must intervene.

Under Mama's watchful eye and fierce protectiveness, Brother and Sister learn the skills needed to survive on their own. With persistence and practice, Brother becomes an accomplished flyer, demonstrating the unique flight abilities of hummingbirds.
