Authority in Religion

"Authority in Religion" is a profound exploration of the foundational sources of religious conviction and the tension between institutional dogma and individual conscience. Written by the influential Quaker theologian Edward Grubb, this work delves into the historical and philosophical evolution of authority within the Christian tradition.

The book examines three primary pillars of authority: the Church, the Bible, and the individual spirit. Grubb meticulously analyzes how these sources have functioned throughout history, questioning where the ultimate mandate for faith truly resides. Is authority external, imposed by ecclesiastical structures and ancient texts, or is it internal, discovered through reason and the "Inner Light"?

By navigating the complex relationship between tradition and personal experience, "Authority in Religion" offers a thoughtful defense of a faith that is both intellectually grounded and spiritually vital. It addresses the challenges posed by modern criticism and scientific inquiry, seeking a synthesis that respects historical legacy while embracing the evolving nature of truth. This volume remains an essential resource for students of theology, religious philosophy, and those seeking to understand the delicate balance between corporate belief and personal enlightenment.
