L'articolo 438 del Codice penale, abolito in Spagna solo con l'avvento della Seconda Repubblica nel 1931, segna infatti il destino tragico e cruento della protagonista del romanzo. Vittima delle continue umiliazioni e angherie del marito Alfredo, Maria Addolorata decide infine di rivendicare la propria dignità e libertà di donna. Un nuovo amore e la prospettiva di una vita finalmente felice sono l'ultima illusione prima dell'efferato e premeditato gesto di Alfredo. Le affinità giuridiche tra Spagna e Italia nei primi decenni del Novecento, lo stile ameno e conciso e la ferma denuncia di una vergognosa discriminazione di genere rendono quest'opera un testo di estrema attualità.
